GLYNN TURMAN IS MY HERO
March 21, 2008
My husband and I are hooked on In Treatment. 1) Gabriel Byrne
He’s awesome, but until now he’s appeared in horrible (End of Days, Polish Wedding), at best barely watchable movies (Ghostship). Still I’ve always liked him. He seems thoughtful, even in the flimsiest roles. It’s great to see him in a role that he can really dig his teeth into. And what’s more, they put his accent to good use. As Dr. Paul Weston Psy.D, his character is always telling his patients that they have “big burdens” to deal with; and with his fading Irish brogue he says, “big borden.”
Anyway, suffice it to say, we really like the show. While Deadwood is my first love on the small screen, and no (t.v. character) man will ever take the special place in my heart reserved for Dayton Callie (a.k.a. Charlie Utter)
Damn! (another tangent!) I was totally blown away by Glynn Turman’s performance in Tuesday’s episode. I won’t spoil it for anyone, but I will say I’m not too proud to admit: I was weeping–seriously–big streaming tears. He’s brilliant. It was the best performance I have ever seen on t.v. I was not expecting him to be that awesome. He, like Byrne, is a very familiar face. And like Byrne, shows up in a lot of barely watchable crap, despite his dramatic depth. Turns out, however, he’s got quite a history, both personally and professionally. 1) He originated the role of Travis Younger on Broadway at the age 12 or 13. 2) He was married to Aretha Franklin 3) He was originally cast as Hans Solo in Star Wars.
So you probably recognize him from the jillions of television and movie roles he’s played over the last 40 years. However, I highly recommend checking out this In Treatment Season 1 Episode 37. It will blow your mind!
